Paste a link to a public post on X and this page resolves the media attached to it — video or GIF — and offers the renditions X publishes.

X "GIFs" are not GIFs

When you attach a GIF to a post on X, the platform converts it to a silent, looping MP4 video before publishing. What other users see in their timeline is a video playing on loop with the controls hidden.

So the file you download here is an MP4, not a .gif. That is not a substitution on our part — the actual GIF stopped existing the moment it was uploaded. X made this change years ago because GIF as a format is enormously inefficient: a few seconds of animation can outweigh a minute of video.

Practically this is good news. The MP4 is smaller, sharper, and plays everywhere. It just will not behave like a GIF in places that specifically expect one — some chat apps and forums will treat it as a video attachment rather than an inline animation. If you genuinely need a .gif file, you will have to convert the MP4 afterwards, and it will get larger and worse in the process.

The renditions X publishes

X transcodes each uploaded video into several fixed sizes and serves whichever fits the viewer's screen and connection. Those renditions are what appear as your buttons — commonly a small, a medium and a full-size version.

The Best quality (auto) option merges the best video stream at 1080p or below with the best audio into a single MP4. For X this almost always resolves to the largest rendition available, because X rarely publishes anything above 1080p to begin with.

One consequence worth knowing: X's own transcode already reduced quality when the video was uploaded. Nothing downloaded from X is the uploader's original file, regardless of which button you press or which tool you use.

Public posts only

Only publicly visible posts resolve. Protected accounts, posts from accounts that have blocked the viewer, and anything gated behind a subscription are unreachable — there is no login step in this tool, so it sees exactly what a logged-out visitor sees.

Since X now restricts a fair amount of content to signed-in users, a post that loads perfectly for you may still fail here. The test is the same as everywhere on this site: open the link in a private browsing window. If it shows you the post, it will resolve.

Quote posts need care too — make sure you copy the link to the post that actually holds the video, not the one quoting it. The quoting post has no media of its own attached.

After the download

Files arrive as download.mp4. On Android that goes to your Downloads folder and appears in the gallery shortly after; on iPhone, Safari puts it in the Files app, and you need the share icon and Save Video to move it into Photos.

Silent GIF-style clips will look broken in players that show a persistent audio meter — there is genuinely no audio track, which is expected rather than a failed download.
