Free YouTube thumbnail downloader. Paste a video link to grab the thumbnail in HD on iPhone or Android — no app, no login.
Paste any YouTube link and this page gives you the video's thumbnail in every size YouTube stores it in. Unlike the other tools here, nothing is sent to a server — the work happens entirely in your browser.
Below: the four sizes and their exact dimensions, why the largest one sometimes will not load, which link formats are accepted, and what you may and may not do with the image afterwards.
YouTube generates a fixed set of thumbnail files for every video and stores them at predictable addresses. This page builds those addresses from the video ID in your link and offers all four:
HD — 1280 × 720. The full-resolution thumbnail, and the only one worth using for anything you will display large. This is the file the creator uploaded, scaled to 720p.
SD — 640 × 480. A 4:3 crop rather than a scale, so the sides of a widescreen thumbnail are trimmed off. Useful when you specifically need 4:3.
HQ — 480 × 360. The most widely used size across the web. Good for list rows and cards.
MQ — 320 × 180. Small, 16:9, fine for dense lists and previews where the image is decorative.
The 1280 × 720 file only exists if the source video was published at 720p or higher. For older uploads, low-resolution videos and some Shorts, YouTube never generated it, and requesting it returns a broken image.
This page handles that: if the HD file is missing, the preview automatically falls back to the 480 × 360 version so you still see something. The HD button will still be offered, because whether that file exists is YouTube's decision and cannot be known before trying it.
If HD gives you a blank or grey image, that video simply has no HD thumbnail. Take the next size down — no tool can produce a file YouTube never created.
The video ID is extracted from the URL, and five shapes are recognised:
youtube.com/watch?v=… — the standard desktop link.
youtu.be/… — the short share link from the mobile app.
youtube.com/shorts/… — Shorts work exactly like regular videos here.
youtube.com/embed/… — embed URLs from an iframe.
youtube.com/v/… — the legacy format, still found in older pages.
Extra parameters on the end — timestamps, playlist IDs, tracking tags — are ignored, so you can paste a link straight from the share sheet without cleaning it up. What will not work is a channel or playlist URL: those are not videos and have no thumbnail of their own.
This tool is the one exception on the site. There is no API call and no server step: your browser reads the ID out of the link, constructs the image addresses, and requests the pictures directly from YouTube. The link you paste is never transmitted to us, because there is nothing here to transmit it to.
A word on what you do next. A thumbnail is part of someone's video and is their work. Using one for reference, commentary, review or study is ordinary practice; republishing it as your own artwork or as the face of unrelated content is not, and is the kind of thing that gets channels struck.
If a button opens the image rather than saving it — which is what happens on most phones — long-press or right-click it and choose Save image.
The 1280 × 720 file only exists when the video was published at 720p or above. Older and low-resolution uploads never had one generated.
Yes. A Shorts URL contains a normal video ID and is handled exactly like any other video link.
Unlisted videos generally work, since their thumbnail files are publicly addressable. Private videos do not.
Mobile browsers preview images rather than downloading them. Long-press the opened image and choose Save image.
No. This page runs entirely in your browser — the ID is read locally and the images are requested straight from YouTube.
It is the creator's work. Reference, commentary and review are ordinary uses; presenting it as your own or as the face of unrelated content is not.
